WASHINGTON – In a chilling verdict, 61-year-old Gary Bellinger from Maryland has been found guilty of one count of first-degree child sexual abuse and one count of second-degree child sexual abuse.
The jury’s decision came after a grueling four-day trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The case against Bellinger was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Pamela A. Smith, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
According to the harrowing evidence and testimony presented at trial, it was revealed that in 2015, Bellinger sexually abused a then-15-year-old female relative.
Bellinger now faces the grim prospect of life imprisonment without parole. If released, he would be compelled to register as a sex offender for the rest of his days.
In their announcement of the verdict, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith commended the tireless efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department in investigating this case. They also acknowledged the dedication of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marco Crocetti and Kathleen Houck from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The Honorable Maribeth Raffinan has scheduled Bellinger’s sentencing for August 30, 2024.
