LEXINGTON, Ky. – Gary Kendall, a 66-year-old man from Raceland, Kentucky, has been handed a 120-month prison sentence for possession of child pornography.
Kendall, already a lifetime registered sex offender, was investigated by the Kentucky State Police after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about a user on the internet chat service Chatstep who had uploaded suspected child pornography on January 6, 2017.
A search of Kendall’s residence revealed a hard drive with five images depicting sexual images of females under 12 years old. Kendall admitted to using Chatstep and uploading images, pretending to be a little girl. He was previously convicted of receiving child pornography in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of West Virginia in March 2001.
U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning handed down the sentence. The investigation was directed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kentucky State Police, with the United States represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily K. Greenfield.
Under federal law, Kendall must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence and will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for 15 years following his release.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
Project Safe Childhood is a collaborative effort between U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). For more information, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
