George Alexander, Megan’s Law Violation, Pennsylvania 2020

George Alexander, a 28-year-old sex offender from Philadelphia, has been held accountable for violating Megan’s Law, a law designed to protect the public from convicted sex offenders.

On May 9, 2020, United States District Judge Jan. E. DuBois sentenced Alexander to 21 months’ incarceration, 12 months’ home confinement, and five years’ supervised release for his failure to register his new address after moving from his registered Philadelphia address.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Alexander was convicted of sexual contact with a minor in 2018 and served time in prison. However, after his release, he moved to a new address in Vermont, but failed to notify the authorities of his change of address.

The purpose of Megan’s Law, also known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), is to provide the public with current information about the whereabouts of sex offenders. The law requires sex offenders to register their home, work, and school addresses with state law enforcement, so that individuals can search a database and be aware of convicted sex offenders living, working, or attending school in their neighborhood.

U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain emphasized that the purpose of Megan’s Law is to provide the public with current information about the whereabouts of sex offenders, and that those who fail to comply with the registration requirements will be aggressively prosecuted.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service and the Colchester, VT Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Nancy Rue is prosecuting the case.

Michael T. Harpster, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division, stated that parents have the right to know if a predator lives next door, and that Megan’s Law was enacted to provide that information to the public and better protect children.
