McALLEN, Texas – A 30-year-old Texan has admitted to smuggling over $654,000 worth of narcotics into the country, announced U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery. Gerardo Jimenez pleaded guilty to the crime, which is expected to result in a significant prison sentence.
According to court documents, Jimenez knowingly entered the Hidalgo Border Patrol (BP) Port of Entry with the narcotics in his car on November 3, 2020. A K-9 unit alerted authorities to the presence of the drugs, which were found hidden in the battery of his vehicle.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered four kilograms of heroin and two kilograms of 100% pure methamphetamine, valued at $654,000. The narcotics were concealed in the battery of Jimenez’s car, a clear attempt to evade detection.
Jimenez, a resident of Pharr, Texas, is facing a minimum of 10 years in federal prison and a possible $10 million maximum fine. U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez will impose sentencing on August 19, at which time Jimenez will learn his fate.
Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation, with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eliza Carmen Rodriguez is prosecuting the case.
Jimenez has been in custody since his arrest and will remain there pending sentencing. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of narcotics trafficking and the efforts of law enforcement to combat it.
The estimated street value of the narcotics seized is $654,000, a staggering amount that highlights the scope of the problem. As the case proceeds, it will be interesting to see how the court decides to punish Jimenez for his crimes.
