Iowa Man Faces Prison for Illegally Reentering the Country
A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to 98 days in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.
Gerardo Lopez-Mendez, 32, was found by immigration agents in Cedar Falls, Iowa, following a traffic stop of a vehicle containing six illegal aliens in May 2018.
Lopez-Mendez, who was residing in Cedar Falls at the time of his reentry, had previously been deported from the US in 2014 and admitted to reentering the country without permission.
He pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry into the US on July 3, 2018, and was sentenced by US District Court Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids.
Lopez-Mendez will also serve a one-year term of supervised release following his prison term, although there is no parole in the federal system.
He is currently being held in the custody of the US Marshal’s until he can be turned over to immigration officials.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
