MIAMI, FL – A Guatemalan national accused of fueling America’s cocaine appetite is now in U.S. custody. Roberto Carlo Giron Hernandez, 49, also known as “Gordo” and “RC,” was extradited from Guatemala and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami tomorrow to answer to charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, knowing it would be smuggled into the United States.
The feds allege Giron Hernandez was a key player in a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. Court documents detail a conspiracy to distribute the drug, with the clear intent of importing it into the U.S. market. Guatemalan authorities apprehended Giron Hernandez on February 3rd, acting on a provisional arrest warrant issued by U.S. authorities. The wheels of justice, greased by international cooperation, have now delivered him to face the music.
A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida has already handed down a one-count indictment, charging Giron Hernandez with conspiracy to distribute cocaine for importation. If found guilty, “Gordo” isn’t looking at a slap on the wrist. He’s facing a potential life sentence – a harsh reminder that moving serious weight comes with serious consequences.
The announcement of Giron Hernandez’s extradition came jointly from U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida, Deanne L. Reuter, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Miami Field Division, and DEA Guatemala Country Attaché Aubree Fierro. The DEA’s Miami and Guatemala offices spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, the Department of State, and the Guatemalan government.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Kirkpatrick will be leading the prosecution, tasked with proving Giron Hernandez’s involvement in the alleged conspiracy. This case falls under the umbrella of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative designed to dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations and combat the influx of illegal drugs and violence. The operation leverages the resources of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
It’s important to remember: an indictment is not a conviction. Giron Hernandez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
