Grace Kirkness, Assaulting Federal Officer, Texas 2024

HOUSTON, Texas – A brutal attack on a federal officer has landed a 26-year-old Canadian national in hot water. Grace Kirkness, a resident of Canada, has been charged with forcibly assaulting a detention center officer at the Houston Contract Detention Facility in Houston.

According to the criminal complaint filed March 2, Kirkness was being held at the facility pending her removal to Canada. On January 21, the suspect allegedly refused to follow orders from contract detention officers, sparking a violent confrontation. When authorities attempted to place her in handcuffs, Kirkness allegedly punched, kicked, and bit the officer, leaving them shaken.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Ganz is prosecuting the case.

Kirkness made her initial appearance in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dena H. Palermo. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in federal prison as well as a possible $250,000 maximum fine.

It’s worth noting that a criminal complaint is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. Kirkness is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.

The charges against Kirkness come as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by federal officers on a daily basis. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
