HOUSTON – Odon Chavez-Esquivel, a 38-year-old Mexican national, has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for his third conviction of illegally reentering the United States.
Chavez-Esquivel pleaded guilty on September 30, 2025, to the charge, which was brought by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
According to court documents, Chavez-Esquivel has a history of violating U.S. immigration laws and has been removed from the country on multiple occasions. He was first removed in May 2003, but returned illegally in April 2011 and again in August 2012.
Chavez-Esquivel’s latest infraction occurred in August 2022, when he was found to be in the United States following a fourth conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol.
U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen handed down the sentence, which will be served at a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
Chavez-Esquivel is expected to face removal proceedings once his prison sentence is completed.
Immigration Customs Enforcement – Enforcement Removal Operations conducted the investigation into Chavez-Esquivel’s activities, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Law prosecuted the case as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling the invasion of illegal immigration and protecting communities from violent crime.
