GRAND RAPIDS – Former Grandville orthodontist Thomas Shannon, 43, is facing federal charges after a disturbing investigation revealed a pattern of sexual exploitation of minors. Shannon was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, and now faces decades behind bars if convicted.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey announced the charges today, stemming from a report by a therapist that a 16-year-old victim had been exploited on Snapchat. Investigators quickly zeroed in on Shannon, linking him to the victim through Snapchat and CashApp records. The depth of his depravity was initially concealed by a desperate attempt at self-preservation.
In a brazen move, Shannon hired a private forensic examiner to scour his phone, hoping to disprove any connection to child pornography. The tactic backfired spectacularly. The examiner found child pornography and immediately turned the evidence over to law enforcement. Further investigation of Shannon’s phone and social media activity unveiled additional victims, including a 12-year-old girl. A second minor victim also came forward, detailing how Shannon initiated contact online and coerced her into sexually explicit video chats.
Shannon is now charged with a litany of serious federal crimes, each carrying significant penalties. He faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years, and up to 20 years, for both Attempted Receipt of Child Pornography and Receipt of Child Pornography. Possession of Child Pornography also carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years. But the most severe charges – Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and Sexual Exploitation of a Minor – each carry a mandatory minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving Homeland Security Investigations, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the Fuquay Varina Police Department in North Carolina, and the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland. This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative dedicated to protecting children from online predators and bringing them to justice. Partners involved include the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force and multiple federal, state, tribal, and local law enforcement agencies.
Project Safe Childhood focuses not only on prosecution but also on community education and prevention. Resources are available at www.projectsafechildhood.gov. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding possible child exploitation to contact their local law enforcement immediately. It is crucial to remember that the charges in the criminal complaint are accusations, and Thomas Shannon is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
