Bank Robber on the Run
A Greece man is facing up to 20 years in prison after being charged with bank robbery. According to sources, 34-year-old Joseph Cumbo handed a demand note to a teller at the Bank of America branch at 5091 Broadway in Depew, N.Y., stating, “I have a gun, count out $10,000 quickly.”
The alleged robber is suspected in two other bank robberies, one in Cheektowaga, N.Y. and one in Pittsford, N.Y. The FBI, along with local police departments, have been investigating the crimes.
Cumbo made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy and is being held pending a detention hearing on March 17, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.
The maximum sentence for the crime is 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and Cumbo is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank T. Pimintel is handling the case.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, Depew Police Department, Cheektowaga Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, and Greece Police Department.
