Grimy Times has uncovered a shocking case of racial discrimination in Green Brook, New Jersey, where the township has agreed to pay $35,000 in compensatory damages to a former employee, Anthony Rivera, who was subjected to racial harassment in the workplace.
According to court documents, Rivera, an African-American road worker, was regularly subjected to racial slurs, jokes, and remarks by his supervisor from 2006 through 2009. The township of Green Brook allegedly discriminated against Rivera and unlawfully retaliated against him after he complained to management in October 2007.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit, filed in conjunction with a consent decree, alleges that Green Brook Township violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by discriminating against Rivera on the basis of his race.
Under the terms of the decree, Green Brook Township must pay Rivera $35,000 in compensatory damages and provide training on its anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies to all employees and managers.
The township also agreed to prohibit discrimination against any employee or job applicant on the basis of race and to refrain from engaging in unlawful retaliation.
This case highlights the need for employers to take steps to prevent racial discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
Green Brook Township must now ensure that its employees are aware of and adhere to its anti-discrimination policies, and that any instances of racial harassment are promptly addressed.
