GRIMSBURG, LOUISIANA – In a stunning revelation of federal program misuse, 62-year-old Beverly Watson McNabb has pleaded guilty to the theft of government funds, according to Acting United States Attorney Ellison C. Travis.
Beverly Watson McNabb, resident of Greensburg, Louisiana, appeared before U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick and admitted to the crime of stealing government funds. The theft conviction carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and a period of supervised release.
According to her plea, McNabb gained access to the retirement benefits of an elderly family member, R.W., through direct deposit to his commercial bank account. She then stole these funds, totaling approximately $50,000, from December 5, 2015, until at least April 7, 2020.
McNabb is accused of using the stolen money for personal expenses such as a wedding dress and other luxury items. She also made cash withdrawals from the account for various purchases, including meals at restaurants and shopping at supermarkets. The theft was discovered during an investigation by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and the United States Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
The case against McNabb is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Edward H. Warner, who also serves as Deputy Criminal Chief.
As this grim tale of financial misdeed unfolds, the community of Greensburg and beyond are left to question how someone could betray the trust placed in them for such gainful, yet illegal purposes.
