Christopher Bates Jr., Child Sex Abuse Images Possession, Connecticut 2022

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Christopher Bates Jr., a 37-year-old Greenwich attorney, has been sentenced to federal prison for his shocking possession of child sex abuse images and videos.

Bates was today handed down a 24-month sentence by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven, followed by five years of supervised release. His transgression: the ownership of approximately 1,222 images and two videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children, including infants.

The revelation came as an international law enforcement investigation pinpointed an IP address linked to Bates’ residence for accessing dark web content. On November 30, 2022, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents swooped in during a search of Bates’ electronic devices, where they uncovered the disturbing material.

With a law degree from New York and Connecticut under his belt, Bates faced additional penalties, including paying $15,000 in restitution, a $17,000 assessment to the Child Pornography Victims Reserve fund, and further assessments totaling $5,100. His arrest came on December 13, 2022, and he pleaded guilty to the charges on February 7, 2024.

Bates is currently released on a $300,000 bond with electronic monitoring but will report to prison on July 11. The investigation was led by HSI with assistance from the Greenwich Police Department, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel prosecuted the case. This conviction is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative aimed at protecting children from sexual exploitation.
