BILLINGS, MT – Gregory Richard Boyd, 40, of Billings, Montana, is facing a decade behind bars after a federal judge convicted him of illegal firearm possession following a two-day bench trial. Boyd, a convicted felon, knowingly possessed a 9mm pistol, a clear violation of federal law, and a danger to the citizens of Montana.
The case unfolded after Billings police officers executed a search warrant at Boyd’s residence on April 10, 2019. During the search, a 9mm handgun was discovered hidden under clothing in a bedroom, loaded with a magazine containing ten 9mm bullets. Boyd was allowed to leave the scene in a Chevy Blazer, but quickly went on the run, fleeing to California. Law enforcement soon discovered he hadn’t reported to work, and began tracking his vehicles.
The Blazer, along with another vehicle owned by Boyd, were located at an autobody shop. The owner confirmed Boyd had asked to store the vehicles on the property. A subsequent search of the Blazer revealed a box of 9mm ammunition – missing ten rounds that matched the bullets found at his home. Forensic analysis confirmed Boyd’s DNA was likely present on the firearm, solidifying the case against him. Boyd had previously been convicted of a federal felony in July 2007, stripping him of his right to own firearms.
U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich didn’t mince words, stating, “Firearms in the hands of felons are a threat to community safety, and we will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute violent offenders.” Laslovich specifically thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian C. Lowney and Timothy A. Tatarka, as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Billings Police Department for their work on the case. This conviction is a direct result of their combined efforts.
Boyd now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following his incarceration. He remains detained pending sentencing, which is scheduled for September 27th. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities.
The PSN program, recently strengthened, focuses on building trust with communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and rigorously measuring results. This conviction serves as a warning: those who illegally possess firearms, especially with prior convictions, will be pursued and brought to justice. The ATF Denver Field Division played a key role in the investigation.
