A Montana man is facing up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm in a South Dakota court.
Steven Shane McCann, 29, of Missoula, Montana, appeared before Chief U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on February 14, 2013, and pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to court documents, McCann was found in possession of a firearm on May 17, 2012. At the time, he was a previously convicted felon.
The investigation into McCann’s possession of the firearm was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Shattuck.
A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for May 20, 2013. McCann was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending acceptance of this plea and sentencing.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
