A 54-year-old Cullman County man has admitted to producing child pornography while sexually abusing at least seven minors over a seven-year period. Gregory Jerome Lee pleaded guilty in federal court today to four counts of production of child pornography, marking a grim end to a case rooted in years of predatory abuse and digital concealment.
Lee, who appeared before U.S. District Judge Virginia Emerson Hopkins in Birmingham, admitted to sexually abusing the child victims between September 1996 and December 2003. During that time, he routinely recorded videos and images of the abuse—graphic evidence of a calculated and sustained pattern of exploitation that federal prosecutors call both heinous and methodical.
In addition to producing the material, Lee admitted to participating in secret, password-protected online chat rooms with co-conspirators where they discussed their sexual abuse of children and exchanged child pornography. Those exchanges continued until August 2007, creating a digital trail that investigators eventually used to dismantle his hidden network of abuse.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service led the investigation, tracking digital footprints and encrypted communications that exposed Lee’s role in a broader underground network of child exploitation. The probe underscores the persistent danger of hidden online communities used by predators to normalize and perpetuate abuse.
Prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Fortune, alongside Trial Attorneys Amy E. Larson and Ralph Paradiso from the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, the Department of Justice’s nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation through coordinated federal, state, and local efforts.
Sentencing for Gregory Jerome Lee is scheduled for April 12. He faces a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison on each count, with life under federal supervision a likely outcome. Authorities continue to work to identify and assist victims, emphasizing that the scars of such crimes are lifelong—but so is the reach of the law.
