Griebein Alexis Pinot-Duarte, a Honduran national, has been charged with human smuggling in a case that led to the discovery of 51 illegal aliens in a refrigerated trailer near Freer, Texas. According to a complaint, Pinot-Duarte allegedly smuggled more than four dozen individuals in a cramped compartment beneath boxes of produce with limited means of escape.
The trailer was found to be at a 55-degree temperature, and a K-9 alerted to the rear doors, prompting a further inspection. If convicted, Pinot-Duarte could face up to 10 years in federal prison. The case is part of a larger effort to secure the border and combat human smuggling, which has seen a surge in recent months.
Pinot-Duarte is just one of 235 individuals charged in immigration and border security-related matters from November 21-27, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. The cases include 17 people allegedly involved in human smuggling, 70 charged with illegally entering the country, and 146 facing charges of felony reentry after prior removal.
Most of those individuals have prior felonies, including narcotics, violent crime, immigration crimes, and more. Other relevant cases charged this week relate to firearms and other immigration crimes. The cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to repel the invasion of illegal immigration and protect communities from violent crime.
Pinot-Duarte’s case is particularly notable, as it highlights the dangers faced by those attempting to cross the border. The 51 individuals found in the trailer were in a cramped and unsanitary conditions, with limited means of escape. The case also raises concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by human smugglers.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas remains one of the busiest in the nation, representing 43 counties and over 9 million people. Assistant U.S. Attorneys from all seven divisions work directly with law enforcement partners to prosecute suspected offenders of federal crimes.
