BRIDGEPORT, CT – Michael W. Landon, 39, of Groton, will spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced today to 360 months imprisonment and 15 years of supervised release for sickening crimes against children. U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley delivered the sentence in federal court, holding Landon accountable for producing and possessing child sex abuse material, a depravity that earned him a deservedly harsh penalty.
The FBI launched an investigation in March 2023 after discovering Landon distributing child pornography on Wickr, an encrypted messaging service favored by those attempting to hide their vile activities. Investigators quickly determined Landon wasn’t just a consumer of this material; he was actively trading videos within a chat room dedicated to the darkest corners of voyeurism – specifically, surreptitious recordings of a minor girl in her own bathroom and bedroom. The level of calculated cruelty is staggering.
A search of Landon’s iPhone on April 4, 2023, unveiled even more horrific evidence. Forensic analysis revealed a video depicting Landon sexually assaulting a minor boy, alongside a trove of additional images and videos detailing child sexual abuse. The phone also contained messages through Telegram, linking to online repositories explicitly labeled as containing “CP (‘child pornography’) And Rape Mega Drive Collection” and “Forced Teen Sex.” This wasn’t a momentary lapse in judgment; it was a deliberate and ongoing obsession.
Landon has been held since his arrest on related state charges on June 28, 2023. He eventually pleaded guilty on April 8, 2025, to one count of production of child pornography and one count of possessing and accessing with intent to view child pornography. While the federal case is now closed with this sentencing, state charges against Landon remain pending, potentially adding to his already lengthy prison term.
The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Groton Police Department, with the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sean P. Mahard and Nancy V. Gifford. The prosecution was conducted under the umbrella of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative, a program dedicated to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation. U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan also extended thanks to the New London State Attorney’s Office for their cooperation.
