Groves Felon Locked Up for 63 Months for Gun at Central Mall
A Texas felon has been locked up for 63 months after being caught with a firearm at Central Mall in Port Arthur, Texas. Moses Benjamin Castillo, 38, of Groves, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael J. Truncale on May 23, 2024, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Port Arthur Police received information on September 28, 2022, that Castillo was in possession of methamphetamine and a gun in the Central Mall parking lot. Police initiated a traffic stop after observing Castillo commit a traffic violation and discovered a firearm, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia during a search of his vehicle.
The investigation revealed that Castillo was a convicted felon, prohibited by federal law from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
