GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In the heart of Guam, communities have come together to celebrate National Red Ribbon Week, a national event aimed at raising awareness about the perils of drug abuse. The weeklong campaign, which runs from October 23rd to October 31st, commemorates its roots in 1986 with the grassroots organization of concerned parents, honoring DEA Agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena, who lost his life while on duty.
This year, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands (NMI) have extended their observance beyond a single week. Simon Sanchez High School marked the occasion with a Proclamation Signing event on September 28th, attended by dignitaries including Lt. Governor Raymond Tenorio and Acting DEA Resident Agent in Charge Dave Stubbs.
The campaign is a testament to the community’s resolve for a drug-free society, with research highlighting the pivotal role of consistent parental and role model opposition to substance use. The Red Ribbon Committee, comprising local and federal agencies along with private and non-profit organizations, has been instrumental in this endeavor.
Outreach efforts included school presentations by U.S. Attorney Alicia Limtiaco and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rosetta San Nicolas. Students across Guam learned about the dangers of drug abuse and were encouraged to take a stand against substance use. Events like National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, drawing contests, and community outreach at Micronesia Mall demonstrated the campaign’s breadth.
Photos from events across Guam show a united front against drug abuse, with dignitaries and law enforcement personnel joining students in the Red Ribbon Wave in Hagatna. This year’s celebration not only honored Agent Camarena but also served as a call to action for continued vigilance in the fight against drug abuse.
