In a crushing blow to Guam’s streets, Ian David Waki, a 48-year-old local, was slapped with a 97-month sentence for his role in distributing methamphetamine hydrochloride.
Waki’s downfall came after a chaotic police pursuit on July 7, 2023, which began when officers attempted to stop a stolen Ford F-150 truck he was driving. The chase ended on a dead-end road in a jungle area, where Waki was apprehended following a brief struggle.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a wallet containing bags of methamphetamine, MDMA, and a cellphone, as well as a wallet with more bags of methamphetamine, amphetamine pills, $1,069 in currency, and Waki’s driver’s license.
The DEA Southwest Laboratory later determined that the substances contained 105.6 grams of methamphetamine with a purity of 97 percent.
United States Attorney for the Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, Shawn N. Anderson, praised the efforts of GPD officers, stating, “I applaud the efforts by GPD officers throughout this investigation. This case once again highlights the dangers officers face during traffic stops.”
The investigation was a joint effort between the Guam Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Devarup Rastogi, Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Guam.
As part of his sentence, Waki will also serve three years of supervised release and pay a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. Additionally, defendants convicted of federal drug offenses may no longer qualify for certain federal benefits.
