A Guatemalan national has been sentenced to 8 months in prison for running a fake ID ring in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Rigoberto Vasquez-Vasquez, 43, was arrested in September 2025 after a search warrant turned up computers, laptops, and fake IDs at his home.
Vasquez-Vasquez was part of a scheme to sell fake Social Security and Permanent Resident cards to other undocumented immigrants in the area. The ring was advertising and manufacturing the fake documents from 2024 to 2025.
The operation made money by charging people for the counterfeit documents, which were used to get jobs and access services meant for lawfully present citizens and immigrants.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey called out Vasquez-Vasquez’s lawless behavior, saying he ‘doubled down on his criminal behavior’.
After serving his sentence, Vasquez-Vasquez will be handed over to ICE for removal proceedings.
