Edgidio Vasquez-Mencho, Counterfeit Identification Documents, Michigan 2024

⏱ 2 min read

Edgidio Vasquez-Mencho, a 41-year-old Guatemalan citizen, has been sentenced to 6 months in custody for his role in a scheme to sell fake identification documents to other illegal aliens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Between 2024 and 2025, Vasquez-Mencho and his co-conspirators manufactured and sold counterfeit Social Security and Permanent Resident cards, as well as other false identification documents, to individuals living in the area without permission. This was not Vasquez-Mencho’s first run-in with immigration authorities – he had been found in the United States illegally twice before and was allowed to voluntarily depart and then removed to Guatemala.

Vasquez-Mencho’s role in the scheme was to deliver the counterfeit documents to buyers and collect payments. The conspirators profited from the sales, while the buyers used the fake IDs to obtain employment and access to taxpayer-supported public services. The sentencing is the result of a joint effort by the US Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to crack down on the production and sale of fake identification documents.

According to U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey, Vasquez-Mencho’s actions were a serious offense, not only because he had repeatedly violated immigration laws but also because he had enabled others to do the same. HSI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Jared Murphey also weighed in, stating that the sentencing sends a clear message that HSI will aggressively pursue and dismantle criminal organizations that traffic in fraudulent identification documents and exploit the immigration system.

After serving his sentence, Vasquez-Mencho will be removed to Guatemala for the third time. The case highlights the ongoing issue of identity theft and immigration fraud in the United States and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat these crimes.
