Dr. Nkechy Ezeh, the founder of West Michigan’s Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for orchestrating a brazen $1.4 million fraud scheme. Ezeh, 61, of Kent County, stole taxpayer and donor money intended for vulnerable preschool children in underserved communities. The scheme, which was characterized as ‘widespread’ by Chief U.S. District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou, led to the closure of the nonprofit in 2023 and left many West Michigan preschools without funding.
Ezeh’s greed knew no bounds, as she used the stolen money for personal gain instead of supporting hundreds of low-income children and their families. The nonprofit, which provided essential services such as meals, transportation, and advocacy, was funded by the Department of Health and Human Service’s Early Head Start program, the U.S. Department of Education, and private donors.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey condemned Ezeh’s actions, stating that her greed is ‘beyond reprehensible.’ Judge Jarbou ordered Ezeh to pay $1.4 million in restitution to the victims of the fraud and $390,174 to the IRS. Ezeh was also sentenced to a concurrent prison term of 60 months for evading income taxes.
The sentence was hailed as ‘perfectly appropriate’ by VerHey, who noted that the stolen money could have made a significant difference in the lives of West Michigan’s most vulnerable children. Ezeh’s case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of nonprofit fraud and the importance of accountability in the nonprofit sector.
