Aws Mohammed Naser, a 38-year-old former resident of Westland, Michigan, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and possessing a destructive device. The sentencing came after a jury convicted Naser last year following a five-week trial. Naser, who referred to himself as a ‘soldier of the Caliphate’ and ‘son of the Islamic State’, was found guilty of attempting to provide personnel and services to ISIS, knowing the organization’s terrorist activities.
The evidence presented during the trial showed that Naser became radicalized and attempted to support ISIS on two occasions. The jury deliberated for approximately six hours before returning a unanimous verdict. The case was investigated by the FBI Detroit Joint Terrorism Task Force and partner agencies, who identified and disrupted Naser’s activities.
U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. stated that Naser repaid the United States’ hospitality by building a bomb and supporting its ‘great enemy’. The sentencing sends a strong message to those who support terrorism or violent extremism against the United States, said Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to prevent and disrupt terrorist activities in the United States. The FBI and other agencies work tirelessly to identify and bring to justice individuals who pose a threat to national security and public safety.
