A crowded Blue Bridge in downtown Grand Rapids became a war zone when Tyrone Kenneth Smith, Jr., 29, fired off a high-capacity semiautomatic pistol, sending four rounds into the air on June 22, 2025.
Smith, a convicted felon with a history of firearm-related crimes, had no business being near a gun, let alone firing it in a crowded public gathering.
Police were able to recover the Polymer P80 pistol, dubbed a ‘ghost gun’ due to its lack of serial numbers, which made it difficult to track. The extended magazine was loaded with 22 live rounds when it was recovered.
U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey called Smith a menace and said he deserved the 90-month sentence handed down by Judge Robert J. Jonker.
