Monteze Morton, Voluntary Manslaughter While Armed, District of Columbia 2026

A deadly altercation on Hartford Street SE in Washington DC turned fatal on March 22, 2024, when 29-year-old Dimitrious Brown was shot and killed. The killer, 36-year-old Monteze Morton, had a history of firearms misuse, having been previously convicted of robbery and armed robbery in Maryland.

Morton, who was not allowed to own or possess a gun, shot Brown following a brief altercation in the 2800 block of Hartford Street SE. The motive behind the shooting is still unclear, but the outcome is all too real.

On Friday, April 10, 2026, Morton pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter while armed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable J. Michael Ryan sentenced Morton to 14 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release and mandatory registration as a gun offender.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro commended the work of Assistant U.S. Attorney Miles Janssen, who investigated and prosecuted the case.
