A convicted sex offender was caught carrying a stolen shotgun on a DC Metro bus, sparking outrage and raising questions about public safety.
Gerald Anthony Evans, 30, boarded a WMATA bus on December 10, 2024, without paying his fare. When a Metro Transit Police officer stopped him, Evans revealed a Mossberg 590 Shockwave 12-gauge shotgun in a bag under his coat.
The loaded shotgun had been reported stolen, and Evans’ criminal history is a long one, including a 2013 armed carjacking conviction and a 2016 sex offense conviction in Prince George’s County.
Evans pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and was sentenced to 21 months in prison, plus three years of supervised release.
His sentence is a stark reminder that carrying a gun on public transportation comes with serious consequences.
