In a brazen act of violence, Robert Lyles fired a stolen pistol at a stranger on the platform of Atlanta’s busy Five Points MARTA station on August 4, 2022.
The 2022 shooting was just the latest in a string of crimes committed by Lyles, a repeat offender with a lengthy history of gun offenses and family violence battery.
Initially charged locally, Lyles was released on bail, but re-arrested for another gun-possession offense just days later. Five days after the shooting, officers found Lyles standing by the entrance to the same MARTA station, carrying the stolen firearm he had used in the shooting.
It wasn’t until March 2024 that a Fulton County grand jury indicted Lyles for the shooting, but federal agents had already sought intervention by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which initiated a federal prosecution in December.
U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg praised the cooperation between agencies, saying it was crucial to addressing the ongoing threat of gun violence and protecting communities from predators like Lyles.
