BECKLEY, W.Va. – A hard-hitting crime has shaken the Federal Correctional Institution at Beckley. Jerry Stewart, 31, was found to have possessed a weapon, commonly referred to as a ‘shank,’ on February 13, 2020.
According to court documents, Stewart was seen by a staff member placing the handcrafted weapon on the ground in the compound at the prison after an incident with another inmate. The weapon was a piece of metal about six inches long, sharpened to a point on one end with a cloth handle on the other end.
The revelation of Stewart’s possession of the weapon led to a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which ultimately resulted in Stewart’s sentencing.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston made the announcement and commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess handled the prosecution.
United States District Judge Frank W. Volk imposed the sentence, which is 18 months in prison, to run consecutively to the sentence Stewart is currently serving.
The case, No. 5:20-cr-00204, is available on the website of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, along with related court documents and information.
The people of Beckley demand safety and justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
