A Guatemalan national’s brazen scheme to use a fake social security number has been brought down in a federal court.
Abel Castillo-Monrroy, 36, was sentenced to three months in prison, followed by immediate deportation, for his role in the scheme.
According to prosecutors, on June 23, 2021, Castillo-Monrroy used the date of birth and social security number of a Texas resident to obtain a Pennsylvania identification card.
The scheme came to light when Castillo-Monrroy was found to be unlawfully present in the US on August 1, 2023, while already incarcerated on other charges.
United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan commended the Office of the Inspector General of the Social Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Border Patrol for their role in the investigation and prosecution of Castillo-Monrroy.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge W. Scott Hardy, who imposed the maximum penalty allowed under the law.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of using fake social security numbers and improper entry into the US.
Castillo-Monrroy’s case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to uphold the law and protect American citizens.
