Defendant’s Descent into Chaos
Grimy Times has learned that Guilherme Alves De Melo, a 32-year-old Brazilian national, entered a guilty plea to intimidating and interfering with a flight crew and flight attendants. The offense occurred on an American Airlines flight from Calgary, Canada to Chicago, Illinois.
According to court documents, Alves became disruptive on board, prompting a flight attendant to repeatedly ask him to calm down. When Alves failed to comply, the situation escalated, and he was restrained by fellow passengers using zip ties provided by the flight crew.
The flight was subsequently diverted to the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, where Alves was removed from the aircraft by Cedar Rapids Police. However, his behavior continued, with him becoming loud and using expletives in the presence of other passengers and airport employees.
Alves was subsequently charged with disorderly conduct in Linn County District Court and pleaded guilty to the offense on June 24, 2018.
Under federal law, Alves faces a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and 5 years of supervised release following any imprisonment. A sentencing date has yet to be set.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard L. Murphy and was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations.
Those with information regarding this incident can contact the authorities at the Eastern Iowa Airport.
