Eric Rollins Burgess, a 45-year-old from Moulton, Alabama, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. On May 20, 2023, Burgess was pulled over by a Moulton Police Department officer for failing to stop at a stop sign. During the stop, Burgess provided false identifying information, which led to his detention and arrest. A search of his vehicle and person revealed marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a .22 caliber revolver.
Burgess has a history of felony convictions, including multiple counts of Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana. These prior convictions made him ineligible to possess a firearm, and his sentence reflects his status as an armed career criminal.
The case was investigated by the ATF and the Moulton Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara M. Judah handling the prosecution. U.S. District Judge Liles C. Burke handed down the 15-year sentence, which will keep Burgess off the streets and prevent him from committing further crimes.
Burgess’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of illegal firearm possession, particularly for those with prior felony convictions. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in keeping communities safe from armed career criminals.
