A sweep of indictments in Southern Georgia has caught multiple defendants in its net, all charged with firearms offenses and immigration violations. The defendants, including Robert Lee Jones, Steven Allan Darby, and Luis Alvarado-Pavedes, are facing serious time – up to 15 years in prison – and significant fines for their alleged crimes in Richmond County and Savannah. The indictments were handed down by the July term of the federal Grand Jury, with U.S. Attorney Margaret E. “Meg” Heap announcing the charges. The exact motives behind these crimes are still unclear, but the message from law enforcement is unmistakable: firearms offenses will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Among the charges, some defendants are accused of illegal possession of a machinegun, while others are charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or illegal alien. These crimes can result in up to 10 years in prison for the machinegun charge and up to 15 years for the others, accompanied by significant financial penalties and up to three years of supervised release. The defendants are all scheduled to face justice in the Southern District of Georgia.
In addition to the firearms charges, six men are also facing charges of Re-entry After Removal or Deportation, having been found in the U.S. after at least one prior removal. These defendants, all from Mexico, were arrested in various counties across Southern Georgia, including Camden, Atkinson, and Bulloch. The charges against them reflect a continued focus by law enforcement on immigration violations in the region.
