Gun Possession Charge Lands Randolph County Man in Hot Water
A Randolph County man is facing serious consequences after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm. Jason Randall Howard, 38, of Elkins, West Virginia, admitted to possessing a 9mm pistol in Randolph County in August 2016.
Howard’s guilty plea comes after he was previously convicted in Randolph County of Domestic Battery. This new conviction for ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm’ carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. In this case, Howard’s history of domestic battery will likely be taken into consideration during sentencing.
The investigation into Howard’s gun possession was led by the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
The case was heard before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi. Howard’s guilty plea is a significant blow to his freedom and could have lasting consequences for his future.
