A brutal scheme to flood the streets of Alabama with high-powered firearms and swindle unsuspecting lovebirds out of their life savings has come to a grinding halt, thanks to the tireless efforts of the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to a recent press release from the Department of Justice, 42-year-old Rafail Gavrilov of Hoover, Alabama, has been denaturalized and stripped of his U.S. citizenship after being caught red-handed for his role in a massive gun trafficking ring. Gavrilov, who entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2012, obtained his U.S. citizenship through a sham marriage in 2016.
But that’s not all – investigators also uncovered a trail of deceit and betrayal that led to the denaturalization of two more individuals, 35-year-old Dmitry Kuznetsov of Birmingham, Alabama, and 28-year-old Sergey Kuznetsov, his brother. The brothers, both naturalized U.S. citizens, had obtained their citizenship through a series of fake marriages.
The scheme, which spanned several years and multiple states, saw the defendants selling high-powered firearms to unsuspecting buyers, often with no regard for the safety of the public. The guns, sourced from various states including Georgia and Florida, were often sold to individuals with no background checks or licenses.
But the gun trafficking ring was just the tip of the iceberg. In a shocking twist, investigators discovered that the defendants had also been swindling their victims out of thousands of dollars in a series of romance scams. The victims, often elderly women, were lured into online relationships with the defendants, who would then use their charm and charisma to extract money from them.
The Department of Justice is seeking to revoke the citizenship of a third defendant, 32-year-old Polina Shishkina of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, who obtained her U.S. citizenship through a sham marriage in 2018. Shishkina and her husband, 35-year-old Alexander Kuznetsov, are accused of defrauding the government out of thousands of dollars in a health care scam.
Shishkina, who allegedly used her husband’s medical credentials to scam the government out of $250,000, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Her husband, who faces charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, could face up to 10 years in prison as well.
Meanwhile, Rafail Gavrilov, the gun trafficker, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The Department of Justice is seeking to revoke his citizenship and deport him to his native Russia.
