New Orleans, LA – In a gritty turn of events, Alfred Montgomery, the 29-year-old ex-con from Hammond, has been locked away for 15 years after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. This sentence is the result of Montgomery’s previous conviction for distribution of marijuana and his extensive record of simple burglary.
Montgomery’s latest sentence, handed down by Judge Jane Triche Milazzo on June 5, 2019, stems from two separate counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. These mandatory minimum sentences are a direct consequence of the federal Armed Career Criminal Act, which targets individuals with previous convictions for violent crimes.
The defendant’s lengthy criminal history includes seven counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling in Tangipahoa Parish. His current sentence is concurrently served with a previous 5-year sentence for distribution of marijuana, all to be served under the United States Bureau of Prisons’ watchful eye.
This case was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN brings together various stakeholders to tackle community crime issues and has shown effectiveness in lowering violence rates. Under this initiative, Montgomery is one of the most violent offenders targeted for enforcement efforts.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hammond Police Department for their diligent work on the case. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany L. Reed led the prosecution. Montgomery’s fate underscores the severity of gun possession charges and the government’s commitment to curbing violent crime in Louisiana.
