Hantz Saint Marc, 4 Years and 6 Months in Prison for Stolen Identity Refund Fraud, Florida 2014
A Tampa man has been sentenced to four years and six months in federal prison for theft of government property and aggravated identity theft. Hantz Saint Marc, 36, pleaded guilty on February 19, 2014, to engaging in stolen identity refund fraud from April 2009 to May 2011, with two co-conspirators.
According to court documents, Saint Marc and his co-conspirators engaged in a scheme to steal the identities of U.S. veterans and use their information to file fraudulent tax returns. The scheme resulted in nearly $300,000 in government funds being stolen from the IRS and victimized more than 45 veterans.
In May 2011, law enforcement discovered lists of identifying information and pre-paid debit cards containing fraudulently-obtained tax refunds in two rented hotel rooms. The rooms also contained medical records stolen from the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital.
The case was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of the Inspector General, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and the Tampa Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney is prosecuting the case.
At sentencing, Saint Marc was held responsible for the fraudulent tax returns and the harm caused to the victims. He will serve his sentence in federal prison and will be required to pay restitution to the victims.
