A 46-year-old Queens man has been convicted of transporting aliens in the United States.
Harpushpinder Singh, who was detained by Border Patrol at an immigration checkpoint off the New York State Northway on June 12, 2016, faces up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The conviction was announced by U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and John C. Pfeifer, U.S. Border Patrol’s Chief Patrol Agent for the Swanton Sector.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Singh transported two Indian nationals from Champlain, New York, to North Hudson, New York, knowing they were in the country illegally.
The jury reached its verdict after a 3-day trial. Singh will be sentenced on March 14, 2017, by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the United States Border Patrol.
Singh’s sentence will be determined by the judge based on the statute he was charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.
