Jose Sostre, Escape from Custody, Connecticut 2024

Leonard C Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Lawrence Bobnick, Acting United States Marshal, announced today that JOSE SOSTRE, 41, of Hartford, has waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to escaping from the custody of the Attorney General.

Sostre was sentenced to 120 months of imprisonment and four years of supervised release for distributing heroin in 2012, after leaving the Watkinson House Residential Reentry Center in Hartford on November 24, 2020, without permission. He did not return to the facility and was later taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service on February 23, 2021.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Sostre’s escape from the halfway house was a brazen act that put himself and others at risk. The U.S. Marshals Service, who investigated the case, worked tirelessly to track down the fugitive and bring him to justice.

Sostre faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, with sentencing scheduled for November 24, 2021. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Gresham will be prosecuting the case.

The case against Sostre is a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strict supervision over those released from federal prison. The U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Connecticut will continue to work together to ensure that those who fail to comply with the terms of their release are held accountable.

The public is reminded that Sostre’s guilty plea is not a guarantee of his sentence, and that the Court will ultimately determine the severity of his punishment.

Leonard C. Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, praised the U.S. Marshals Service for their excellent work in tracking down Sostre and bringing him to justice.
