Hartford Man Sentenced for Trafficking Heroin and Fentanyl

Alex Sabo-Santiago, also known as “Boricua,” 42, of Hartford, was sentenced to 60 months of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release, for trafficking heroin and fentanyl. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny in Hartford.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Hartford Task Force learned in June 2019 that Sabo-Santiago was expecting a delivery of a kilogram of heroin. However, on June 6, 2021, Sabo-Santiago was arrested after he met a drug courier in Hartford and took possession of what he thought was a kilogram of heroin. A subsequent search of his residence revealed nearly one kilogram of fentanyl, items used to process and package narcotics for sale, and a 9mm firearm.

Sabo-Santiago, who is currently released on a $100,000 bond, is required to report to prison on September 21. His guilty plea to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl was entered on December 7, 2020.

The DEA’s Hartford Task Force includes personnel from the DEA Hartford Resident Office and the Bristol, Hartford, East Hartford, Manchester, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, Windsor Locks and Willimantic Police Departments. This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey M. Stone.

Leonard C Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced the sentencing. Boyle stated that the lengthy sentence reflects the severity of the offense and the potential harm that Sabo-Santiago’s actions could have caused to the community.

The Hartford community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that this violent trafficker is off the streets, thanks to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and the justice system.
