Hattiesburg Man Caught Smuggling Narcotics

A Hattiesburg man has been caught red-handed in a brazen attempt to smuggle narcotics into a local prison.

Lester Brown, 51, was apprehended in January of 2021, as he was throwing packages containing narcotics over the fence at the South Mississippi Regional Correctional Institution in Leaksville, Mississippi.

According to officials, Brown’s actions were a blatant attempt to supply the inmates with illicit substances. His reckless behavior not only endangers the lives of the inmates, but also poses a significant threat to the safety and security of the prison staff.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Gulfport is leading the investigation into the case, with the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Annette Williams is prosecuting the case.

Brown is set to be sentenced on November 23, 2021 and faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison. A federal district judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The DEA is working tirelessly to disrupt the flow of illicit substances into our communities and bring those responsible to justice.
