BUFFALO, N.Y. – The grim halls of justice were once again called into action this week as Oscar Leo Hernandez Sanchez, 37, a citizen and national of Mexico, faced charges for illegal re-entry to the United States. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that the suspect was arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the notorious Peace Bridge Port of Entry on June 26, 2025.
According to a criminal complaint, Sanchez was spotted in a tractor trailer in a restricted area near the Duty Free Shop entrance. His attempt to reverse down the ramp towards I-190 raised red flags, leading to CBP officers intervening. Upon presenting a Mexican Passport and a Consular Identification Document, the authorities escorted him for secondary inspection, where they discovered he had been physically removed from the U.S. in December 2011.
This incident is a stark reminder of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). The operation seeks to protect communities from violent crime by utilizing the full resources of the Department of Justice.
Sanchez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and has been detained pending further proceedings. The investigation leading to this charge was spearheaded by Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy.
It is important to note that being charged with a crime does not mean guilt; Oscar Leo Hernandez Sanchez is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
The grim saga of illegal re-entry continues as law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to uphold our nation’s immigration laws and protect its citizens.
