A brazen shooting in downtown Albuquerque sent shockwaves through the community, but for Kevin Metcalf, the consequences have finally caught up. The 37-year-old Hobbs man was sentenced to 66 months in prison for firing a shot that struck a security guard at El Rey Liquors on December 29, 2024.
Metcalf’s botched heist was caught on camera as he tried to steal a bottle of liquor before turning on the store employee who intervened. Witnesses say he fled the scene before returning to fire a shot toward two employees standing in the doorway, hitting one in the leg.
A nearby officer with the Albuquerque Police Department heard the gunshot and observed a vehicle leaving the area without headlights. Officers eventually stopped the vehicle and detained Metcalf, who was seated in the front passenger seat. A tan firearm was recovered from beneath the passenger seat, which Metcalf later admitted was the one used in the offense.
As it turns out, Metcalf’s felony convictions made him ineligible to possess firearms and ammunition, but he didn’t seem to care. Now he’ll pay the price – 66 months in prison, with three years of supervised release upon his release.
