GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — A Holland man was arrested for stealing mail from residents of the lakeshore community, including bank account checks and credit card convenience checks.

Zachary Stephen Thomas, 32, faces up to 5 years in prison for theft and/or unlawful possession of United States mail, and up to 30 years for bank fraud.

According to an affidavit unsealed in federal court, Thomas began stealing mail in December 2015 and forged the checks, depositing them into his own bank account and withdrawing large amounts of cash before the bank discovered the checks were fraudulent.

Local law enforcement conducted two searches of Thomas’s apartment and recovered a significant amount of mail addressed to other individuals.

Thomas is being held in the custody of the United States Marshal and will have a preliminary and bond hearing on Thursday, May 19, 2016, in United States District Court in Grand Rapids.

The case is being investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ronald M. Stella.

The charges in the criminal complaint and supporting affidavit are merely accusations, and Thomas is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
