Selvin Geovani Velazquez-Villanueva, Alien Smuggling, Mississippi 2020

Harrison County, Miss. – Selvin Geovani Velazquez-Villanueva, a 33-year-old illegal alien from Honduras, received a 24-month federal prison sentence for smuggling other illegal aliens, announced U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Gilbert Trill, Acting Special Agent-in-Charge of U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in New Orleans.

On February 11, 2020, a Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy on Interstate 10 observed a Chevrolet Trailblazer driving erratically, leading to a traffic stop involving Selvin Velazquez-Villanueva and his five passengers. The group was found without proper documents for their U.S. presence, with Velazquez-Villanueva identified as a previously deported alien.

Velazquez-Villanueva, along with three passengers who had been deported or removed from the U.S. and returned unlawfully, pled guilty to various charges. His passengers were sentenced for unlawful return after removal, receiving ‘time served’ and one year of supervised release each, with subsequent removal proceedings.

U.S. Attorney Hurst commended the collaboration between federal agencies in this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stan Harris prosecuted the case.

The sentencing hearing was conducted before Senior U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts to combat human smuggling and illegal immigration across the United States.
