ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Erlis Antonio Leon Castellanos, a Honduran national, received a four-year federal prison sentence on September 16th for his pivotal role in a massive cocaine distribution network that stretched from Central America to the streets of the United States. Castellanos was the final defendant sentenced in a sprawling case targeting the ‘Los Valles’ (Valle DTO) organization.
Court documents reveal that the Valle DTO wasn’t dealing in scraps. We’re talking multi-metric-ton shipments of cocaine flowing out of Honduras, first to Guatemala, then across the border into Mexico, and finally, into the U.S. for wider distribution. This wasn’t some back-alley operation; they moved product using helicopters and commercial trucks – a serious logistical undertaking. Some members even used human couriers flying commercial airlines with smaller quantities.
Castellanos wasn’t just a middleman; he was a key storage point. He owned property right on the Honduras-Guatemala border, a strategic location the DTO exploited. Initially, he accepted loads of 15-20 kilograms. But his operation grew. By the end of the scheme, he was handling shipments of *hundreds* of kilograms at a time, storing the drugs before they were smuggled further north. He also acted as a delivery man, passing cocaine to other DTO members responsible for coordinating the final leg of the journey.
Between 2011 and 2014, Castellanos personally moved cocaine across the border, a brazen act that ultimately caught the attention of federal investigators. His capture and subsequent extradition from Guatemala in March were a direct result of cooperation between the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs and Guatemalan law enforcement. This wasn’t a solo operation, it took international collaboration to bring him to justice.
U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert for the Eastern District of Virginia, along with FBI Sacramento Field Office Special Agent in Charge Siddhartha Patel, and DEA Washington Division Special Agent in Charge Christopher C. Goumenis, announced the sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kristin S. Starr and Philip Alito skillfully prosecuted the case, piecing together the evidence that led to Castellanos’ conviction.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide push to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and stem the flow of illegal drugs into the country. It’s a component of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), signifying the scale and seriousness of the Valle DTO’s operation.
