Honduran Man Pleads Guilty to Reentering U.S. Illegally

A Honduran man has admitted to entering the United States illegally, following a previous deportation after a conviction for attempted arson in Florida.

Gregorio Anderson Romero, 36, who was living in New Britain, pleaded guilty to reentry of a removed alien in U.S. District Court in Hartford, Connecticut. Romero was deported in April 2009 after serving a 366-day sentence for the attempted arson conviction.

According to court documents, Romero reentered the U.S. without authorization, and was later arrested by the New Britain Police Department on August 12, 2018, on charges of assault and disorderly conduct. He has been detained since his arrest.

U.S. Attorney John H. Durham announced the guilty plea, which was made before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea. Romero faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years at sentencing, which is scheduled for April 25, 2019.

The investigation into Romero’s activities was conducted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with the assistance of the New Britain Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Slater.

Romero’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a willingness to ignore the consequences of his actions. His guilty plea marks a significant step towards holding him accountable for his crimes.

The U.S. government takes immigration offenses seriously, and will continue to work tirelessly to enforce our nation’s borders and protect our citizens.
