GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — In a brazen attack at 26 Federal Plaza in New York, Honduran national Joel Antonio Alonzo faces charges for assaulting a federal security officer and attempting to seize the officer’s service firearm. The incident, which unfolded during Immigration Court proceedings, shook the safety of those present, including civilians and children.
“The safety of federal facilities and the dedicated personnel who serve there is non-negotiable,” declared U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Joel Antonio Alonzo’s alleged attempt to forcibly seize a firearm from a federal security officer in a crowded public area endangered law enforcement personnel and civilians alike.”
According to allegations, on June 6, 2025, Alonzo arrived at the Immigration Court displaying disruptive behavior, forcing his way ahead of others and tossing papers at service window personnel. In a sudden burst of aggression, he lunged at an officer, grabbing the loaded firearm with significant force.
Quick actions by federal protective security officers thwarted Alonzo’s attempt to pull the weapon from its holster. The 19-year-old from Honduras is charged with one count of assaulting an officer of the U.S. using a deadly or dangerous weapon, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
This case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Zabel leading the prosecution. The charges contained in the Complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
