Honduran National Pleads Guilty to Gun Control Act Violations

NEW ORLEANS – In a shocking turn of events, Elmer Javier Acosta-Meija, a 27-year-old Honduran national, has pleaded guilty to violating the Federal Gun Control Act.

According to court documents, Acosta-Meija, who is an alien illegally present in the United States, was found to be in possession of two firearms. This is a serious violation of the law, as Acosta-Meija is prohibited from possessing any firearm due to his illegal immigration status.

The indictment against Acosta-Meija states that he possessed the firearms, despite being an alien illegally in the United States. This is a clear case of disregard for the law and a threat to public safety.

At sentencing, set for September 13, 2018, Acosta-Meija faces a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than ten (10) years, a fine of $250,000.00, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.00. Additionally, he is subject to a period of supervised release after imprisonment of up to three years.

The case against Acosta-Meija was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made reducing violent crime a top priority, and the reinvigoration of PSN is just one step in achieving this goal.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security in investigating this matter. Assistant U.S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is in charge of the prosecution.

This case serves as a reminder that the law will not be taken lightly, and those who violate it will be held accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
